After eight years of President George W Bush and his unwillingness to admit any kind of mistake, I was getting used to the fact that perhaps our leaders were al so set in their ways that they could admit no wrong.  Bush would rather have seen the country dissolve into a mess than admit a mistake, or even admit that he needed to change a decision because of changing circumstances around him.

This is why it was so refreshing to hear President Barack Obama admit that he had made a mistake in nominating former Senator Tom Daschle as his Health and Human Services Secretary.  Not that I want to hear every day that something went wrong.  But I never believed that every choice would be perfect from the start.  As promised, Obama let us know what had happened, and changed his decision to make the situation right.  I’m so proud of him right now.

I believe that at the base level, Senator Daschle was a proper choice for the position.  He had the proper connections for doing business with people, the right skills, and a passion for getting Americans the health care system they need.  It is unfortunate that it turns out he was not an appropriate choice, since he has some ethics issues that would disqualify him from proper consideration.  in the end, it is the right thing that someone else will be chosen.

It is also the right thing that President Obama took responsibility for the situation so we can get it over with and get on with the business at hand.  I hope that this continues as a trend for the future.
